Sick of all the Valentine’s Day frenzy? For anyone that’s not a romantic, or is a romantic between romances, Valentine’s Day is at best a draw, at worst absolute torture. You’re surrounded by hearts and flowers, but the high point of your week is stocking up on half-price chocolates on the 15th. If that describes you, then here are five songs that should be on your playlist.
Tainted Love – Soft Cell
“Once I ran to you, now I run from you….” This is definitely love gone wrong, 80s style.
Used to Love Her – Guns ‘n Roses
Was Axl singing about an ex-girlfriend, or his dog, or was it just a bad joke? No one but Axl knows for sure, but when Used to Love Her was released in 1988, there was an uproar. Women’s groups protested, some radio stations refused to play it, Axl was accused of being a misogynistic creep (well, that part may be right) – but it didn’t stop the song from selling.
Everything About You – Ugly Kid Joe
For a “love stinks” song, Ugly Kid Joe sounds awfully upbeat. Maybe they’ve made peace with the break-up? “Some say I have a bad attitude but that don’t change the way I feel about you, and if you think this might be bringing me down, look again ’cause I ain’t wearing no frown!”
Love Stinks – J. Geils Band (as done by Adam Sandler)
The J. Geils Band hit the nail on the head for many when they released Love Stinks in 1980. Adam Sandler took it to a new level with his version in The Wedding Singer.
She Hates Me – Puddle of Mudd
Puddle of Mudd gave us a very blunt assessment of a bad relationship. “I tried too hard and she tore my feelings like I had none and ripped them away…” Is there anyone who hasn’t been there?
